You've flipped the pillow to the cold side twice already. The duvet's half kicked off, the sheet's twisted round one leg, and you're wide awake wondering if the answer is a different fabric entirely. Somewhere along the way, bamboo and cotton both got branded as the 'cooling' option, and now the packaging on almost everything says one or the other.
So which one actually helps? This isn't a case of one fabric winning outright. Bamboo and cotton do genuinely different things to your skin overnight, and the honest answer is that the fabric is only part of what's keeping you warm — or not. Here's what each one is actually doing, and where the real difference lies.
What 'cooling' in a fabric actually means
No fabric is cold to the touch on its own — that sensation lasts a few seconds at most, then your body warms it up like everything else. What a genuinely 'cooling' fabric does is manage heat and moisture better once you're already lying on it: it lets air move through instead of trapping it, and it pulls sweat away from your skin instead of holding it against you.

That's the whole game. A fabric that breathes and wicks moisture will feel cooler through the night, even though it isn't literally colder than the fabric next to it.
Where bamboo genuinely has the edge
Bamboo fibre has a naturally porous structure, which means it moves moisture away from your skin faster than most other fabrics manage. In practice, that's the difference between waking up in a sheet that feels slightly damp and waking up in one that still feels dry. It also tends to feel cooler to the touch when you first lie down, and it dries quickly after a wash — useful if you're doing a lot of laundry.

Where cotton holds its own
Cotton, particularly organic cotton, is still a genuinely breathable fabric — it's just breathable in a slightly different way. It doesn't wick moisture quite as fast as bamboo, but it has a crisp, airy feel a lot of people prefer, especially for a top sheet or a fitted sheet against a mattress protector. It's also generally less processed and, weight for weight, often more affordable.
For a lot of households, the honest truth is that a good organic cotton fitted sheet on a properly breathable bed underneath will feel plenty cool. It's rarely the villain it gets made out to be.
What matters more than the fibre on the label
Weave and thread density change how a fabric feels almost as much as the fibre itself does — a tightly woven, heavy cotton can trap more heat than a looser bamboo blend, and vice versa. Room temperature does more heavy lifting than either fabric. A 100% bamboo sheet in an 24°C bedroom under a heavy duvet will still leave you sweating.
The layer underneath the sheet matters too, and it's the bit most people forget about. A waterproof mattress protector that doesn't breathe properly can undo a lot of the cooling benefit from the sheet sitting on top of it, which is worth knowing before you assume the sheet alone is the problem. And what's actually filling the duvet matters as much as what's covering it — a heavy synthetic duvet under a bamboo cover is still a heavy synthetic duvet.
There's no single winner here — bamboo generally edges ahead on moisture-wicking, cotton holds its own on breathability and price, and both beat whatever synthetic blend is currently making you sweat. The bigger win is checking that every layer of the bed, protector included, is actually built to let air move.
